Hatching Chicks Guide
Hatching is exciting because progress happens slowly and then suddenly. The safest approach is to prepare the brooder early, watch humidity, and avoid unnecessary interference.
Hatching is a process, not a deadline
Chicks may pip internally, rest, pip the shell, and rest again before zipping around the egg. Hatch timing varies with egg storage, incubator conditions, breed, and individual development. Frequent opening during hatch can lower humidity and dry exposed membranes.
Watch without rushing. A chick that has pipped and is resting is not automatically stuck, while a chick showing active bleeding, severe malposition, or prolonged distress may need experienced assessment.
Inside the incubator
Keep vents positioned as directed and avoid sacrificing fresh air to chase humidity. Leave newly hatched chicks until they are dry and active unless the incubator instructions or a safety problem requires movement.
Inside the brooder
Provide a warm zone and a cooler escape area, secure footing, chick-safe water, and starter feed. Chicks should spread comfortably rather than piling under heat or avoiding it entirely.
Hatch-day checklist
- Have the brooder warmed and tested before the first pip.
- Use shallow or chick-safe water equipment that prevents drowning.
- Count chicks and unhatched eggs without repeatedly opening the incubator.
- Check navels, legs, alertness, and ability to stand after chicks dry.
- Clean and disinfect equipment after the hatch is complete.
- Record fertility, early loss, late loss, and hatch rate separately.
Hatching questions
How long can a chick remain in the incubator after hatching?
A dry chick can usually remain for a period while hatchmates finish because it still has yolk reserves. Follow the equipment guidance and move chicks when doing so will not disrupt active hatching.
Why did some fertile eggs not hatch?
Possible causes include storage conditions, temperature or humidity errors, turning problems, contamination, genetics, breeder nutrition, and random developmental loss. Egg-topsy should be performed cautiously and hygienically.
