Chicken Egg Color Guide
Egg color is one of the most enjoyable parts of keeping chickens, but it is also misunderstood. Shell color comes mostly from genetics and does not make one egg more nutritious than another by itself.
Shell color begins with genetics
A hen's breed and inherited genes determine the basic shell color she can produce. White shells receive little pigment, brown shells gain pigment late in formation, and blue pigment is incorporated through the shell. Green and olive shades result when brown pigment overlays a blue base.
Shade can vary during a laying cycle. Brown eggs may become lighter as a hen lays repeatedly, then deepen after a pause. Bloom, speckles, and surface texture can also change the appearance without changing the egg's interior quality.

Are brown eggs healthier than white eggs?
No. Shell color does not determine nutrition. Diet, freshness, hen health, and egg size matter more than pigment.
Can one hen lay different-colored eggs?
A hen stays within her genetically determined color range, although shade and speckling may vary. She will not switch from white to blue or brown.
